Galatea

Galatea is a very different piece of interactive fiction. Galatea was written by Emily Short, featuring a modern rendition of the Greek myth of Galatea. In this piece it deals with a single conversation with one character. This conversation with Galatea can end in many different ways depending on the player's decisions. Galatea is not like your traditional piece of interactive fiction, it has a multilinear plot with documented 70 + endings.

Galatea is the typical interactive fiction UI just with a twist. The game is based featuring the importance of a non-player character (NPC). The main gameplay takes place in one room and all you are doing is interacting with Galatea to get different out comes to the piece. You are using commands like 'Think' or 'Ask' to interactive with this statue Galatea. My first time playing this game I noticed that when you examine Galatea she is not facing you, so I tried 'turn galatea' and she responds by saying 'Don' touch me'. She was still facing the other way so I decided to try the command again, and thats when I got my first ending. After trying to turn her for the second time she grabbed my wrist so tight that I 'feared for my bones'. This 1st ending was a little dark I thought, so I tried to get to a more sincere one on my second time.

My second time playing was not much of a success either. When I examined Galatea and it mentions about the curtain I decided to see if there was anything behind it. I tried commands like 'take curtain' and 'look behind curtain', just wanting to see if there was any explanations or maybe different ways a could get around Galatea. I was mistaken and this lead to another abrupt ending to my time interacting with her. After playing around with this a couple more times, I decided that this was by far on of the more challenging interactive fiction games I have played. Since are only in conversation it's harder to think about questions to ask and things to think about.
